Chapter 10

Sam

I flapped my frozen feet toward the freestanding bathtub by the window. I turned on the faucet and added a bubble mix and then paced around the king-sized bathroom. The exterior walls stretched to the outside. Beyond the glass, mature trees provided natural privacy, except where the balcony faced the ocean.

I opened the door to take full advantage of the ocean’s air. The warm, dark night soothed my tired eyes. A stone walkway below led to the private white sand beach where Gabe’s boat used to be docked at the shore. In the distance, a peaceful breeze ruffled the perfect mirror of water.

The ocean’s air held a promise of a sunny day tomorrow. If Kendra’s new medication worked, this trip could be nothing more than a vacation. I hoped. Though with Kendra, vacationing seemed near impossible.

The faint smell of chlorine drew my attention to the infinity pool below. Its surface bent to the wind’s dance, creating soft ripples and gentler waves.

Steam lifted in the air. I sat on the edge of the tub and dipped my ice-cold toes in the water. Heat flowed up my body. The boat explosion flashed in my mind. I shivered and sank into the giant tub.

I closed my eyes and drifted away in my thoughts. Warmth penetrated down to the bones. The suds lifted, and the lavender aroma stirred, masking the burned smell from my hair. For the first time in days, a wave of relaxation floated over my body. Taking a boat out for a spin in the dark ocean was as close to a nightmare as I’d ever had. If it weren’t for the onboard GPS, we’d have been lost at sea forever, but Kendra was sane enough to know her way around the ocean. And then there was the hike to a cemetery, where we’d eavesdropped on a private conversation I was too ashamed to mention to Gabe. I missed the chance to come out of hiding when Kendra raced back to the beach for the next adventure that blew up in her face.

A subtle scent of burning fuel from the clothes I’d shed across the room reminded me of the boat accident. The bathroom door opened, and I startled at the gentle breeze. He strolled into the room with a towel around his hips. I swallowed hard, like he was the first meal I wouldn’t be able to finish. The memory of him inside of me back home, pushing me up against the bed frame, pulsed through my nether regions.

“Rona – soothing dim.”

“Yes, Mr. Silver,” the overhead smart speaker replied.

His eyes kept me frozen in my spot. The expectation he’d know exactly what I needed grew in my belly. But would he even touch me? I had been on that boat with Kendra before it blew up.

The glass walls around the house tinted and the lights lowered to a candle glow, emanating from behind the mirrors and around the cabinets. The flames reflected on the surrounding glass.

“Nice touch.” My voice trembled.
